Among the Savoy Orders is the Civil Order of Savoy, founded by King Charles Albert of Sardinia in 1831. The Civil Order of Savoy is bestowed on Italians who, “having devoted themselves to professions no less useful than those of the Army, have become, through deep and long studies the ornament of the State or who have through their toils been of use – to the public well being.” Among distinguished recipients are Cavour, Verdi and Marconi.
In keeping with those origins, the Savoy Orders support cultural activities, particularly those with a connection to Italy. The Savoy Foundation sponsors the Savoy History Lecture Series, an annual lecture on a topic related to the House of Savoy.
